Qatar Expands LNG Fleet with New Carrier Construction in South Korea

Nakilat has started building eight new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers at Hanwha Ocean Shipyard in South Korea. This step is part of Qatar’s LNG fleet expansion to strengthen its shipping capabilities. The steel cutting ceremony marked the beginning of construction for these advanced vessels.

Officials from Nakilat, Hanwha Ocean, and financial institutions attended the ceremony. The new carriers will have a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters each. Nakilat fully owns these ships and will lease them to QatarEnergy affiliates under long-term agreements. This expansion ensures efficient transportation for Qatar’s growing LNG sector.

Nakilat’s CEO, Abdullah al-Sulaiti, highlighted the company’s dedication to efficiency and sustainability. He stressed that these ships will include cutting-edge technology to improve performance while meeting global environmental standards.

“These vessels incorporate the latest advanced technologies, ensuring enhanced operational efficiency and higher reliability while adhering to global environmental standards. As we continue to strengthen our position as a global leader in shipping and maritime services, we remain focused on delivering excellence,” said al-Sulaiti.

In early 2024, Nakilat signed agreements with QatarEnergy to operate 25 additional LNG carriers. This move strengthened Nakilat’s position as a leader in LNG shipping. The company continues to invest in modern, high-performance vessels.

The new LNG carriers will feature innovative designs that prioritize safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Nakilat remains focused on delivering high-quality maritime services to support the global LNG industry.
