Veolia-Bahwan Venture Wins Five-Year Contract to Run Oman’s Al Asilah Desalination Plant

Bahwan Veolia Water, a partnership between France’s Veolia and Oman’s Bahwan Engineering Company, has won a five-year operations and maintenance contract for the Al Asilah Desalination Plant in Oman, Veolia said in a statement on Tuesday.

The contract was awarded by Al Asilah Operation and Maintenance LLC. The plant has a production capacity of 80,000 cubic meters a day.

Al Asilah is the fourth desalination plant Veolia operates in Oman, after facilities in Sur, Barka and Salalah. The company said it has supplied water in the sultanate for nearly 20 years.

Together with the nearby Sur plant, Al Asilah will supply drinking water to about 600,000 people across South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, Veolia said. The two sites will share technical resources and operating practices.

Veolia’s scope covers the desalination plant and its on-site solar photovoltaic farm.

The plant is owned by Al Asilah Desalination Company, whose major shareholders include Japan’s JGC Holdings Corporation and Oman’s Bahwan Group.

Philippe Bourdeaux, Veolia’s executive senior vice president for Africa, the Near and Middle East, said the contract strengthens the group’s long-term partnership with Oman and supports its goal of doubling the desalination capacity it operates worldwide by 2030.
