Iraq Expands Green Goal: 500,000 Trees for a Greener Iraq

Iraq continues to boost its national green efforts through a massive tree-planting campaign. The country aims to plant 500,000 trees for a greener Iraq during the current spring season. This initiative comes as part of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s wider goal to plant five million trees across the country.

The Ministry of Water Resources leads this campaign with strong support from other government bodies. Initially, the ministry planted 54,000 seedlings across 102 locations in Baghdad and other provinces. However, this count does not include the Kurdistan Region.

As the project gained momentum, officials decided to raise the planting target. The new goal reflects the importance of climate action in Iraq. Tree planting plays a vital role in reducing desertification and improving the environment.

For a greener Iraq, the ministry has been working throughout the spring season. It also plans to continue during the autumn planting period. This two-season approach allows for better coverage and healthier growth of seedlings.

The Ministry of Agriculture has supported the campaign by providing seedlings. Earlier, it supplied 38,700 seedlings to the Ministry of Water Resources. More recently, it delivered an extra 5,000 seedlings. These contributions ensure steady progress in meeting the higher target.

The planting started in Baghdad on government sites managed by the ministry. After completing work there, teams expanded the campaign to other provinces. This wider outreach ensures that the benefits reach more communities.

Officials from the Afforestation and Nurseries Department confirmed that this is part of a long-term plan. They believe that trees can improve public spaces and help fight climate challenges. They aim to keep planting trees for a greener Iraq.

In conclusion, Iraq’s push to plant 500,000 trees shows its serious commitment to the environment. It is a step toward better air, healthier cities, and stronger climate action.
