Oman has taken a major step to become a top industrial salt producer in the region. The government signed a $34 million deal to launch the Naqa Salt Project in Mahout.
Firstly, the project involves a partnership between Minerals Development Oman (MDO) and Dev Salt. Moreover, this deal took place under the Invest in Oman platform, encouraging strategic investments.
Importantly, the site lies in Al Wusta Governorate along the Arabian Sea. Due to its natural advantages, the area supports solar evaporation, which enables eco-friendly production.
In fact, the salt will have up to 99% purity. Therefore, it meets the standards of many vital industries such as chemicals, oil and gas, food, and pharmaceuticals.
Additionally, industrial salt producer Oman plans to produce 2 million tonnes of salt each year. This volume makes the facility the largest of its kind in the region.
With its location close to Duqm Port, the facility gains an export advantage. As a result, the salt can easily reach markets in India, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The salt production will rely on a 109-square-kilometre area of solar evaporation ponds. Furthermore, this method supports Oman’s shift toward green energy.
Eng Mattar bin Salim Al Badi, CEO of MDO, said the site uses local sabkha formations for sustainable extraction. This reflects Oman’s long-term commitment to eco-conscious development.
Meanwhile, industrial salt producer Hirendrasingh Jhala, Chairman of Dev Global, said the partnership brings in Dev Salt’s global expertise. Consequently, the project is well-placed to meet rising salt demand.
At the same time, the government believes this project will increase In-Country Value (ICV). It will also open new business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Ibtisam Al Farooji from the Ministry of Commerce noted the deal supports Oman Vision 2040. Specifically, it helps diversify the economy and attract green investment.
In addition,industrial salt producer the project supports job creation and skills development in the mining and logistics sectors.
Beyond industrial gains, the project also offers environmental benefits. Over time, the ponds may attract migratory birds, supporting potential eco-tourism.
