DMCC and AQUA-INDEX Unveil Freshwater-Backed Digital Asset for Global Trade

DUBAI – In a bold and innovative step, DMCC has partnered with AQUA-INDEX to reshape the global water trade. Together, they launched the world’s first freshwater-backed digital asset, designed to change how water is valued and exchanged.

Notably, this new token is backed by verified drinking-quality water stored in secure reservoirs. As a result, it allows investors and traders to buy, sell, or receive actual freshwater through a digital asset. Furthermore, it enables the public to participate in a growing water investment market.

This freshwater-backed digital asset combines financial innovation with deep water market expertise. Therefore, it provides a transparent and secure platform to manage water as a tradable commodity. Additionally, the asset creates fresh liquidity opportunities and ensures more stable water pricing structures.

Under this strategic agreement, DMCC and AQUA-INDEX will gain access to DMCC’s world-class infrastructure and global trading networks. Thus, it can efficiently promote water assets across various markets. However, DMCC will not directly own or operate the asset.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, DMCC’s Executive Chairman and CEO, emphasized the urgency of this initiative. “Almost half the global population faces water scarcity yearly,” he stated. “Yet, no mature, regulated market exists for this vital resource.” Therefore, he sees this project as essential for creating a fair, reliable, and legal global water marketplace.

Moreover, this partnership marks a key milestone in the formation of the DMCC Water Centre. DMCC and AQUA-INDEX The centre aims to unite WaterTech companies, logistics providers, and commodity traders under one strategic platform. Consequently, it will turn Dubai into a central hub for water innovation and sustainable best practices.

Yaacov Shirazi, chairman and founder of AQUA-INDEX, shared a bold vision as well. He explained that pricing water based on usage and quality could transform global water management. Additionally, he believes this approach will reduce waste, prevent contamination, and increase access for all communities.

This freshwater-backed digital asset introduces a revolutionary model for trading water. It links value directly to quality and utility. In doing so, it brings water into the regulated commodity world and helps address growing resource challenges.

Ultimately, DMCC and AQUA-INDEX aim to protect the future of a critical global resource. With innovation and collaboration, they are ensuring water becomes accessible, tradable, and valued as it should be.
