Food security gained momentum in Iraq as Turkey’s Tiryaki Agro Holding signed a cooperation deal with the International Finance Corporation. The agreement aims to develop 39 advanced facilities supporting grain and pulse supply across 14 Iraqi cities.
During the announcement, Tiryaki Agro confirmed an initial investment exceeding 120 million dollars. The company emphasized that the initiative will strengthen Iraq’s farming sector and ensure reliable supplies of staple foods. Leaders highlighted that the program intends to improve regional stability while fostering sustainable agricultural growth.
Tiryaki Agro explained that the project’s first phase will conduct feasibility studies and environmental and social assessments. These evaluations will guide investments in infrastructure and farmer training programs. By increasing yields and cutting losses, the plan seeks to enhance food security and promote modern farming practices.
Moreover, the company plans to create an integrated agricultural production and logistics hub. This center will process flour, rice, and pulses while supporting Iraq and neighboring countries. Officials expect the facility to expand Iraq’s export potential and reinforce supply chains serving regional markets.
Chairman Suleyman Tiryakioglu described the initiative as a historic step for Iraq’s agricultural transformation. He stressed that the effort reflects his firm’s six decades of experience in global agri-food supply chains. According to him, the partnership shows a shared commitment to building lasting food security and protecting natural resources.
Chelesa Samgi, a regional director at IFC, welcomed the collaboration. She noted that the project will create jobs, reduce grain imports, and improve rural livelihoods. She added that IFC will focus on helping farmers adopt sustainable techniques that raise productivity and preserve land quality.
In addition, the partners intend to roll out farmer capacity-building programs. Training sessions will teach modern planting methods, post-harvest management, and environmentally friendly practices. Support teams will work closely with rural communities to guarantee long-term success.
Looking ahead, Tiryaki Agro expects the initiative to grow in later phases. The company envisions larger investments, additional processing lines, and expanded outreach to farming clusters. Officials believe that robust food security will underpin economic growth and support social stability throughout Iraq.
