Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani officially inaugurated the first phase of the Abu Nuwas Street expansion project on Monday, October 20, 2025. Moreover, this project is a key part of Iraq’s plan to ease heavy traffic congestion in Baghdad. The government aims to improve mobility, enhance safety, and modernize the city’s road network.
The first phase completed a parallel road beneath the Suspended Bridge. This section spans two kilometers. Specifically,it is designed to improve traffic flow in one of Baghdad’s busiest areas. The entire project covers eight kilometers. It will connect Abu Nuwas Street from Al-Karrada Martyrs Park to Eagles Square on the Karkh side. Once completed, it will provide an essential route for commuters traveling across central Baghdad.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani praised engineers, construction teams, and Ministry of Construction and Housing staff. He noted the project faced challenging conditions. The area is highly congested and densely populated. Nevertheless, teams completed the first phase efficiently while maintaining high-quality standards. Al-Sudani highlighted that the project aligns with the “Baghdad is More Beautiful” initiative. This program develops new transport axes and rehabilitates key streets across the city.
Al-Sudani also confirmed that the first phase is just the beginning. The broader program will include additional road expansions and infrastructure projects. Eventually, it will lead to the fourth ring road. Officials expect it to significantly reduce traffic volume. It will also improve commute times and boost economic productivity in Baghdad.
The expansion incorporates modern engineering solutions. The parallel road under the Suspended Bridge allows vehicles to bypass bottlenecks. This eases congestion in surrounding areas. Once fully operational, it will improve access between residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, and government offices.
The project also generates employment opportunities during construction. Local contractors, engineers, and technical staff are engaged. Officials stressed that such initiatives support urban development, sustainable infrastructure, and better quality of life for Baghdad residents.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani concluded that the Abu Nuwas Street expansion is a model for strategic urban infrastructure. It shows the government’s commitment to solving traffic problems. It also prepares Baghdad for future growth and modernization.
