QatarEnergy has awarded Samsung C&T Corporation the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a major carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project at Ras Laffan Industrial City. The project will serve QatarEnergy’s existing LNG facilities and capture up to 4.1 million tons of CO₂ per year. Consequently, it becomes one of the largest CCS projects worldwide and reinforces Qatar’s leadership in sustainable energy.
HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, welcomed the contract as a key milestone. He explained that the project builds on QatarEnergy’s growing carbon capture capabilities. Moreover, he highlighted that all future LNG expansion projects will implement CCS technologies. As a result, the company aims to capture over 11 million tons of CO₂ by 2035.
The project also supports QatarEnergy’s sustainability strategy and contributes to the Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. In addition, the partnership with Samsung C&T Corporation ensures access to advanced engineering expertise for successful project execution.
QatarEnergy has extensive CCS experience. Its first project, launched in 2019, had a capacity of 2.2 MTPA. Furthermore, two other ongoing projects serve the North Field East and North Field South expansions, capturing and storing 2.1 MTPA and 1.2 MTPA of CO₂, respectively. These projects clearly highlight QatarEnergy’s continuous investment in sustainable energy technologies.
Beyond environmental benefits, the 4.1 MTPA CCS project will boost technology transfer and workforce development. Additionally, it will provide training opportunities and encourage international collaboration. By integrating innovative engineering solutions, QatarEnergy combines operational efficiency with its sustainability goals.
Ultimately, this project illustrates the importance of partnerships, innovation, and global collaboration in reducing carbon emissions. Therefore, awarding the EPC contract to Samsung C&T Corporation positions QatarEnergy as a global leader in responsible energy development. In addition, the initiative sets a benchmark for large-scale CCS projects in the region and worldwide.
