289,000 Livestock Supplied to Meet Consumer Needs in Oman

Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has announced that over 289,000 heads of livestock were supplied to consumers during January and February 2025. Of this number, 267,213 were sheep and goats, while 21,876 were cattle.

Eng. Khalfan Mattar Al Sharji, Director General of Livestock, emphasized that the Ministry is actively collaborating with livestock import companies to meet the growing demand for livestock and red meat. To facilitate these imports, a total of 129 permits have been issued to the companies.

He also noted that the total number of livestock authorized for import is 359,150, including 332,700 goats and sheep, and 26,450 cattle. Al Sharji highlighted the increased demand for livestock imports, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, which drive up consumer needs for red meat.

To ensure public health and prevent the spread of diseases, the Ministry has deployed veterinary quarantine teams who are working round the clock to conduct health checks on all imported livestock.
