Aviation Progress Brings Iraqi Airways Closer to EU Skies

Iraq is moving closer to resuming flights between Baghdad and Europe efficiently for business, tourism, and international trade purposes. Aviation modernization strengthens Iraqi Airways and significantly enhances the country’s international connectivity across multiple sectors and industries.

At the Iraq Transport, Logistics & Airports Exhibition & Conference (ITL Expo 2025) in Baghdad. Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis confirmed that Iraq has already met 78 percent of the EU’s aviation safety standards set in 2015 after detailed inspections and thorough evaluations.

This progress clearly demonstrates Iraq’s strong commitment to lifting the EU flight ban on Iraqi Airways permanently. Officials are working with international regulators to meet the remaining safety requirements fully and ensure global operational compliance.

Once Iraq fulfills all EU conditions carefully. Iraqi Airways plans to resume flights to Europe soon for commercial, cargo, and passenger services. In addition, the airline aims to expand routes further to Asia and the Middle East efficiently.

Iraqi Airways has strengthened its fleet considerably to support this substantial growth in air travel and cargo transport across multiple international destinations worldwide. The airline now operates more than 40 aircraft following new deals signed with Boeing and Airbus recently.

By 2027, Iraqi Airways aims to expand its fleet successfully to 53 planes to meet growing international demand and connect more cities effectively. Meanwhile, pilot and maintenance training programs continue intensively for skilled personnel development. These efforts ensure improved safety and operational readiness consistently across all operations nationwide.

Airport infrastructure is also undergoing significant upgrades currently to support increased passenger flow, cargo handling, and aviation services throughout Iraq. Renovations at Nasiriyah and Mosul airports enhance passenger service dramatically and improve travel efficiency.

These improvements create a stronger aviation network that supports tourism, trade, and economic growth substantially, benefiting citizens and international travelers. They also attract international partnerships and foreign investment effectively to Iraq’s aviation sector for broader development.

When the EU finally lifts restrictions, Iraqi Airways will reopen its European routes immediately. This move will reconnect Iraq to key international markets efficiently and strengthen its global presence remarkably across aviation corridors worldwide.

Through these strategic initiatives, Iraq is positioning itself as a regional aviation hub increasingly recognized globally. Modern aircraft, skilled crews, and upgraded airports prepare Iraqi Airways for safe and efficient international operations effectively, supporting both economic growth and regional connectivity long-term.
