Iraq has authorized a UK-based firm, Date Palm Developments Ltd (DPD), to supply 20,000 tissue-cultured date palm seedlings. This move is part of Iraq’s National Program for Date Palm Rehabilitation and Seedling Propagation for the year 2024. The Ministry of Agriculture will oversee the contract, with the approval granted by Iraq’s Council of Ministers.
As part of this agreement, DPD will be exempt from the usual government contracting and budget execution regulations, streamlining the process. The company, which is majority-owned by the Indian chemical company Atul, is well-regarded for its expertise in date palm cultivation.
This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to Iraq’s date palm industry, which plays an important role in the country’s agriculture and economy. The program aims to rejuvenate and expand the country’s date palm production, promoting both agricultural sustainability and economic growth.
