Digital Authentication Update Strengthens Emirates NBD Security

Emirates NBD announced a digital authentication update, shifting from SMS one-time passwords to push notifications through its ENBD X app. The change starts on November 1, 2025, initially covering account transfers and alerts of Dh100 or less. Debit and credit card transaction alerts will follow soon after.

Under the new system, when customers initiate a purchase with an Emirates NBD card, they receive a push notification directing them to the ENBD X app. There, they review transaction details and confirm using Smart Pass PIN or biometric credentials. If push notifications are disabled, users can open the app manually to verify transactions.

Emirates NBD frames this digital authentication update as a stronger, more convenient security layer. During the transition, SMS OTP fallback remains available for customers who have not yet registered their trusted devices.

The change aligns with a UAE Central Bank directive, which requires banks to phase out SMS OTP and email-based authentication by March 2026. Banks must replace them with in-app, biometric, or token-based mechanisms. Emirates NBD joins other major UAE banks, including ADIB and FAB, in adopting these modern authentication methods.

Experts say the shift helps counter fraud methods that exploit SMS-based OTPs, such as SIM-swap attacks, phishing, and code interception. Additionally, it reduces dependency on mobile networks for authorization and streamlines the user experience.

Financial analysts noted that in-app authentication not only increases security but also boosts customer confidence in digital banking. The digital authentication update may encourage more customers to adopt mobile banking, enhancing convenience while safeguarding sensitive information.

Looking ahead, Emirates NBD plans to expand the system to cover all transaction types. Officials expect the initiative to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and align with broader regulatory and security trends in the UAE’s financial sector.

By introducing this digital authentication update, Emirates NBD strengthens its commitment to secure, user-friendly banking. Customers can expect faster, safer transactions and greater peace of mind across all digital services.
