Iraq launched a comprehensive energy diversification plan to modernize its electricity sector and meet growing national demand. The initiative aims to enhance sustainability and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The plan, announced by Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel, includes large-scale solar and wind projects alongside floating power generation units. Officials stated the country targets 48,000 megawatts of installed electricity capacity by 2030.
Minister Fadel highlighted that Iraq has already installed more than two million solar panels in Basra, with 500,000 additional panels deployed across Babil and Karbala. Authorities also signed agreements to develop power plants contributing to the 48,000-megawatt goal.
The country faces significant electricity challenges. Current demand reaches 37,000 megawatts, but production remains near 26,000 megawatts. Iraq still depends on energy imports, mainly from Iran, which provides about 40 percent of the country’s electricity. This reliance increases vulnerability to supply interruptions.
Officials explained that the energy diversification plan aims to reduce fossil fuel use, particularly during peak summer months when temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius. Renewable projects are expected to stabilize the grid, improve reliability, and cut carbon emissions.
Experts noted that the initiative also promises economic benefits. Expanding solar, wind, and floating generation projects creates jobs and strengthens the national economy. In addition, diversifying energy sources helps Iraq meet environmental targets and sustainable development goals.
The plan aligns with Iraq’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement and supports long-term electricity self-sufficiency. Authorities emphasized that implementing renewable energy projects ensures electricity security for future generations.
Looking ahead, Iraq plans to accelerate renewable energy projects across multiple provinces. The government intends to integrate solar, wind, and hybrid power systems into the national grid while reducing energy imports. Officials view this approach as crucial for economic growth, social stability, and climate resilience.
