Officials have launched a $25 million to the Erbil road project for linking the city’s 120-meter and 150-meter ring roads. The five-kilometer route aims to improve traffic flow and urban mobility.
At the foundation ceremony, Kurdish Minister of Municipalities and Tourism Sasan Awni said the road will include landscaped medians, modern drainage systems, and advanced street lighting. He noted the Region will fully fund the project. A local construction company will handle the work, creating regional jobs.
Authorities expect construction to finish within 15 months. The new road will serve as the first major arterial link between Erbil’s largest highways. Officials said it will reduce travel times and improve access for residents and visitors.
The project arrives amid a tourism surge in Kurdistan. Since the 2022 launch of an eight-year development plan, the Region has welcomed over two million visitors annually. This growth generated more than $7.5 billion in new investments, supporting 3,100 facilities, including hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies.
“There are around 1,000 development projects currently underway across Kurdistan,” Awni said. He added that none have received financial support from Baghdad, highlighting the Region’s independent investment strategy.
Urban planners said the Erbil road project will boost economic activity by linking key commercial zones. Experts noted infrastructure improvements are essential to sustain tourism growth and attract foreign investment.
The road will also enhance safety with modern lighting and drainage. Landscaping will improve the urban environment, supporting Kurdistan’s vision for sustainable city development.
The project reflects the Region’s focus on long-term urban planning. Authorities plan to integrate the new road with future transit expansions and traffic management systems.
Officials hope that completing the project will inspire future infrastructure initiatives. By enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth, the road will strengthen Kurdistan’s position as a hub for business and tourism.
