Germany’s KfW and UNOPS Launch Initiative to Support Affected Communities in Iraq

Germany’s KfW Development Bank and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have partnered to support conflict-affected communities in northern Iraq. A new initiative, titled “Enhancing Local Infrastructure and Services in Sinjar,” aims to improve access to essential services and help the people of Sinjar recover from the damages caused by years of conflict.

The project was announced during a gathering that included representatives from KfW, UNOPS, and the German embassy in Iraq. With support from the German government through KfW, UNOPS will focus on repairing critical infrastructure, including war-damaged shelters and water stations. Additionally, training programs will be provided to relevant stakeholders in Sinjar to enhance their skills and capacity to maintain and develop local services.

One of the key aspects of this initiative is its focus on gender inclusion. Women will be actively involved in the planning and implementation of the project. Furthermore, where possible, the designs will integrate climate-friendly elements to ensure sustainability in the rebuilding process.

The project aligns with several key development goals, including supporting infrastructure, clean water and sanitation, affordable energy, and building sustainable cities. It reflects a broader commitment to addressing long-term challenges in Iraq and providing tangible solutions for its people.

In addition to this project, UNOPS country manager Anil Chandrika announced a four-phase rehabilitation plan for homes damaged by conflict in Sinjar and Anbar. The plan includes distributing medical equipment and ambulances to various sites across Iraq. This initiative highlights the continuous support from the United Nations and its partners to improve the living conditions of Iraq’s affected communities.
