Iraq Awards $764 Million Baghdad Airport Expansion Project

Iraq has awarded a $764 million project to expand Baghdad International Airport. The consortium includes Luxembourg-based Corporacion America Airports (CAAP) and Iraqi firm Amwaj International.

Amwaj CEO Namir El Akabi said the project follows a 25-year build, operate, and transfer model. Moreover, the first phase will increase the airport’s capacity to 8.5 million passengers with a new terminal.

The first phase is expected to be completed within three years. Consequently, construction will modernize the airport, which was built in the 1970s and 1980s. Limited development occurred during decades of conflict, including the Iran-Iraq war, the first Gulf War, and the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Furthermore, the total investment of $764 million highlights Iraq’s commitment to improving its infrastructure. This funding ensures that the new facilities meet international standards and enhance operational efficiency.

In recent years, Iraq has seen relative stability. As a result, major cities are experiencing a construction boom fueled by the country’s oil revenues. Therefore, this airport expansion reflects Iraq’s push to improve infrastructure and boost international connectivity.

The new terminal will improve passenger services, streamline operations, and enhance travel experiences. In addition, it will accommodate increased air traffic as Iraq positions itself as a regional hub.

Officials also highlighted that the project will create hundreds of jobs, benefiting both local contractors and international partners. Consequently, the development supports Iraq’s long-term economic growth and modernization goals.

CAAP and Amwaj have committed to using advanced construction techniques and modern airport management practices. Therefore, Baghdad International Airport will meet global safety and operational standards.

Moreover, the expansion will strengthen Iraq’s aviation network and attract more international airlines. As a result, it will increase tourism, business travel, and trade opportunities across the country.

Authorities emphasized the environmental measures planned during construction. For example, they will reduce emissions, manage waste effectively, and ensure sustainable development throughout the airport expansion.

The Iraqi prime minister’s office did not immediately comment on the project. Meanwhile, international aviation experts welcomed the expansion as a positive step for Iraq’s civil aviation sector.
