raq’s Minister of Industry and Minerals, Prof. Eng. Khaled Battal Al-Najm, along with the Governor of Karbala, attended a major signing ceremony. During the event, they witnessed the signing of three memorandums of understanding (MoUs). These agreements were signed between Al-Yusra Industrial and China’s SEPCO (Shandong Electric Power Construction). As a result, Iraq moves closer to launching vital petrochemical projects in Karbala Industrial City.
The Karbala petrochemical projects aim to boost Iraq’s industrial capacity. Specifically, they focus on building four modern petrochemical plants. In addition, the agreements include the operation and maintenance of production units. These developments will not only enhance local manufacturing but also improve the surrounding infrastructure.
Moreover, Minister Al-Najm highlighted the current progress of Karbala Industrial City. The site, which covers 5,300 dunams, is already 60% complete. It is located just 3 kilometers from the Development Road and the Karbala Refinery. Due to its location, transportation of raw materials and finished goods will be efficient and cost-effective.
Furthermore, the Minister described Karbala Industrial City as a transformative project for Iraq’s economy. He explained that the city holds a strategic position. Therefore, it is well-placed to attract additional investments in petrochemicals and oil-related industries. These efforts will support a more diversified and stable economic future.
In addition to outlining the city’s strengths, Minister Al-Najm also addressed potential investors. He reassured them that the government stands ready to offer support. More importantly, he promised to remove any barriers that could delay development. Through this, Iraq aims to create a welcoming environment for both local and international investment.
Besides strengthening infrastructure, the Karbala petrochemical projects reflect Iraq’s growing ties with China. This cooperation will likely lead to more industrial partnerships in the future. It also signals Iraq’s openness to foreign expertise and capital.
Ultimately, the Karbala petrochemical projects form a central part of Iraq’s broader industrial strategy. With strong leadership, strategic planning, and global partnerships, Iraq is taking confident steps toward industrial expansion and long-term economic growth.
