Iraq gas processing has expanded with the opening of a new unit at the East Baghdad oil field. The facility can process 30 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. The southern section of the field will host the new operation. Processed gas will travel directly to the Bismaya power station. A new pipeline will carry the gas to the facility. The State Company for Oil Projects constructed the pipeline. The project aims to turn associated gas into useful energy.
The Oil Ministry said the facility supports Iraq’s strategy to reduce gas flaring. Instead of burning associated gas, operators can now process and use it. Consequently, the project could provide additional fuel for electricity generation. It could also reduce Iraq’s reliance on imported energy supplies. Furthermore, lower flaring could help reduce harmful emissions around Baghdad. The project therefore connects energy production with environmental and electricity goals.
Oil Minister Basim Muhammad Khudhair al-Abadi praised the project during its opening. He highlighted its potential contribution to national electricity stability. He also recognised the work of Midland Oil Company. The company manages the East Baghdad field alongside operator Zhenhua Oil. Representatives from the operating company also attended the inauguration. They welcomed government support for completing the gas processing project.
Several senior officials attended the opening ceremony. Their presence reflected the project’s importance to Iraq’s energy sector. Officials included representatives from oil production and gas affairs. Electricity authorities also joined the event. Their involvement highlights the connection between gas production and power generation. In addition, the project could strengthen coordination between energy agencies.
Iraq gas processing remains important as the country seeks to use more domestic resources. Associated gas offers an opportunity to support electricity production. However, infrastructure remains essential for collecting, processing, and transporting that gas. The new facility addresses part of that requirement. Its pipeline connection also allows processed gas to reach a major power station.
The Midland Oil Company director described the opening as an important milestone. He linked the project to Iraq’s broader energy security objectives. Meanwhile, the new unit could provide a more reliable domestic gas supply. Iraq gas processing could therefore play a larger role in future energy plans. The project also demonstrates efforts to capture resources that previously went unused.
