Al-Samawah marks the starting point of the newly launched Al-Samawah–Al-Salman–Al-Jumaymah Border Crossing Road Project in Al-Muthanna Governorate. Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani inaugurated the project, which spans 219 kilometers in both directions and aims to strengthen regional connectivity.
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the road will improve transportation efficiency, facilitate trade, and enhance access to border crossings. Moreover, the project is expected to create job opportunities for local communities while supporting economic development in southern Iraq.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to develop infrastructure and modernize key transport routes across the country. In addition, it will promote safer and faster travel for citizens and commercial vehicles.
Officials highlighted that the project will include modern engineering solutions, improved road surfaces, and proper signage to ensure safety standards. Furthermore, engineers designed the road to withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy traffic, ensuring it remains usable for the long term.
The project will improve logistics and freight efficiency between southern Iraq and neighboring countries. A modern roadway will allow faster transport of goods, reduce travel time, and lower operational costs for commercial vehicles.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized that the government prioritizes infrastructure projects that stimulate economic growth, enhance mobility, and strengthen regional trade links. “This road project represents a strategic investment in Iraq’s future and demonstrates our commitment to connecting provinces and border regions,” the statement said.
Authorities will complete construction in phases and coordinate closely with local administrations to deliver the project on time. The project will also support logistics, cross-border trade, and regional integration, benefiting both Iraq and neighboring countries.
By launching the Al-Samawah–Jumaymah Border Road Project, Iraq takes a significant step toward modernizing its national infrastructure. The road will become a key corridor for trade, travel, and economic growth, linking Al-Muthanna with neighboring regions
