Iraq continues making major progress on the Grand Al-Faw Port, located in southern Basra. This large project aims to turn Iraq into a main trade hub in the region.
Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of Iraq’s General Company for Ports, confirmed that workers finished building five port berths. In addition, they completed 85% of the navigation channel and made 70% progress on the submerged tunnel. He also said the container yard is 89% complete, and the road connecting the port to the highway is 99% done.
The company expects to complete all remaining work within this year. Al-Fartousi explained that they use a smart electronic project system to manage the construction. This system includes the latest safety and monitoring tools. It was created with help from top global companies such as Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Technital from Italy.
In 2024, workers finished the large concrete wall for the berths. At the same time, they began building the container yard. Now, they are working on all areas together to finish the project at the same time.
Meanwhile, Iraq and Turkey are actively working on a strategic deal to link Al-Faw Port with Turkish territory. Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu confirmed that negotiations have made significant progress. He said both governments expect to finalize and sign the agreement very soon. This vital connection will offer Iraq direct access to European and Asian markets through Turkish land routes.
Once the agreement is in place, goods arriving at Al-Faw Port can move efficiently across Turkey and beyond. This development will shorten shipping times, lower costs, and enhance Iraq’s role in global logistics. Moreover, the connection will boost regional trade, attract foreign investments, and strengthen economic ties between Iraq and Turkey.
By linking Al-Faw Port to Turkey’s transport infrastructure, Iraq is moving closer to becoming a trade gateway for the Middle East. This move reflects a larger vision to position Iraq as a key player in international supply chains. It also supports the broader goals of economic growth and regional cooperation.
The Grand Al-Faw Port covers 54 square kilometers. It cost $4.6 billion. When finished, it will handle 99 million tons of goods every year. Its planned depth of 19 meters will let it serve the largest cargo ships in the world.
This port is part of Iraq’s bigger plan to join global trade routes and grow its economy. By improving transport and trade links, Iraq hopes to become a strong regional business player.
