Iraq Russia Trade Strengthens Cooperation

Iraq Russia trade discussions are gaining momentum as Baghdad seeks stronger economic ties with Moscow. Iraq’s Ambassador to Russia, Abdul Karim Hashem Mustafa, recently met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Cooperation and Eurasian Integration, Alexander Anatolyevich Pankin, to explore ways to increase bilateral trade and investment.

The meeting took place at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. Both sides highlighted the importance of strengthening relations in economic and commercial sectors. Mustafa emphasized that current trade volumes remain below potential and urged the activation of new agreements and previously signed accords.

In addition, the discussion focused on preparing for the 11th session of the Iraqi-Russian Joint Committee, scheduled later this year in Moscow. The ambassador stressed the need to finalize a bilateral road transport agreement. He also proposed practical mechanisms to ease visa issuance for Iraqi businesspeople traveling to Russia. These steps aim to facilitate trade and investment flows efficiently.

Mustafa also called for follow-up on the 10th Joint Committee session, which was held in Baghdad in February 2025. He emphasized that implementing the previously agreed measures is essential before the next round of talks. The ambassador pointed out that Russian companies operating in Iraq play a positive role, especially in the energy sector. Furthermore, he renewed Iraq’s invitation for Russian firms to participate in strategic projects, including the Development Road initiative.

For his part, Deputy Minister Pankin confirmed Russia’s readiness to strengthen economic and trade cooperation. He promised to address obstacles that may impede progress. Additionally, Pankin underlined the importance of accelerating draft agreements to finalize them during the upcoming Joint Committee meeting.

Overall, Iraq Russia trade cooperation appears poised for expansion. Both governments are working closely to enhance investment opportunities and streamline processes for businesses. Analysts note that practical steps such as transport agreements and simplified visa procedures will likely improve bilateral trade significantly.

As Iraq Russia trade discussions continue, officials expect stronger partnerships in energy, infrastructure, and commercial sectors. The ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to mutual economic growth and deeper regional cooperation.
