The National Investment Commission (NIC) of Iraq held an important meeting with KBR on March 4, 2025, to discuss the development of the country’s first blue ammonia plant in Basra. This plant is expected to play a crucial role in Iraq’s clean energy transition and support the growth of sustainable industries.
The concept of ‘blue ammonia’ involves producing ammonia using ‘blue hydrogen,’ a process where hydrogen is made through steam methane reforming (SMR), and the carbon dioxide is captured and stored, helping reduce environmental impact. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Haider Mohammed Makia, who emphasized how this project aligns with global carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, which are essential for environmental sustainability.
Dr. Makia also pointed out that the plant will create new job opportunities and could establish Iraq as a regional hub for sustainable industries. The meeting was attended by key figures, including Dr. Muna Sabah Al-Jabari, Chair of the Renewable Energy Technical Committee, and representatives from various Iraqi ministries.
During the discussions, they explored the integration of technology, adherence to global carbon reduction standards, and KBR’s international experience with similar projects. This blue ammonia plant will be the third of its kind in the region and is expected to bring both economic and environmental benefits to Iraq.
