Kiswa of the Kaaba Replaced in Saudi Arabia to Begin Islamic Year 1447

Saudi Arabia began the Islamic year 1447 AH with the ceremonial replacement of the Kiswa of the Kaaba in Makkah. Meanwhile, the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque led the event, upholding a tradition that combines devotion and heritage.

The new Kiswa weighs 1,415 kilograms and stands 14 meters tall. It includes four sides and a detailed curtain that covers the Kaaba’s door. Every part of the Kiswa reflects spiritual importance and Saudi Arabia’s dedication to Islamic customs.

To begin with, artisans used 825 kilograms of raw silk to produce the cloth. The silk was dyed black in a facility located in Makkah. They also used 410 kilograms of raw cotton for strength and support. Decorative work required 120 kilograms of gold-plated silver thread and 60 kilograms of pure silver thread.

Notably, the upper part of the Kiswa of the Kaaba includes 16 gold-embroidered belt pieces. Below the belt, seven additional panels are stitched with intricate Islamic patterns. These designs follow centuries-old styles while remaining visually striking.

Seventeen lantern-shaped decorations sit just beneath the belt. Above them, four separate panels feature Surat Al-Ikhlas, a short chapter from the Holy Quran. This verse represents the oneness of God, a central message in Islamic belief.

Another unique part of the Kiswa is a panel that represents the mizab, the golden water spout atop the Kaaba. This element blends architectural detail with sacred symbolism and has been part of the Kiswa for many years.

Additionally, Skilled Saudi workers completed the entire project at the Kiswa Complex in Makkah. The complex specializes in the annual production of the Kiswa using traditional techniques and advanced tools. The replacement of the Kiswa of the Kaaba is one of the most spiritually significant Islamic events each year.

Finally, expert staff at the Kiswa Complex in Makkah completed the project. Through this annual ritual, Saudi Arabia actively honors its role as custodian of Islam’s holiest sites.
