Kuwait to Build Power and Steam Plant in Ratqa

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) signed an MoU with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to build the Ratqa Power Plant. This joint effort aims to integrate power and steam production, strengthen Kuwait’s energy system, and support national industrial operations.

The facility will generate between 1,200 and 1,500 megawatts of electricity. KAPP will manage the project. Therefore, the plant will improve efficiency, cut production costs, and optimize the country’s natural resources.

Additionally, the Ratqa Power Plant will supply steam for heavy oil production at the South Ratqa field. It will support a gradual increase in output to roughly 120,000 barrels per day. Moreover, the plant will boost Kuwait’s electricity network and increase the use of natural gas as fuel.

Sheikh Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah, KPC Deputy Chairman and CEO, stated that the project represents a steppingstone toward a fully integrated energy system. He also emphasized that collaboration with the ministry demonstrates KPC’s commitment to sustainable solutions and meeting future power demands.

The MoU signing took place at the Oil Sector Complex in a ceremony attended by Sheikh Nawaf. KPC participated through Managing Director for Planning and Finance Bader Al-Attar. KOC signed on behalf of CEO Ahmed Al-Eidan, and the Ministry of Electricity was represented by Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel.

Officials noted that the Ratqa Power Plant will strengthen cooperation between oil and energy sectors. Furthermore, it will deliver long-term benefits for industrial operations while promoting environmentally efficient energy use.

Analysts highlighted that the Ratqa Power Plant could serve as a model for future integrated energy projects in Kuwait and the Gulf. Consequently, the project aligns with the country’s strategy to enhance sustainable energy practices and maximize industrial output.

The plant represents a major milestone in Kuwait’s energy development. By combining power generation, steam supply, and oil production support, it creates an integrated and efficient facility that meets multiple national objectives.
