Qatar Advances Smart Mobility with Self-Driving Taxi Launch

Qatar is making a major leap in smart transport with the launch of Autotaxis, announced by Dr Hamed Al Shaibani, Director of Information Technology at Mowasalat (Karwa). He explained that this initiative strengthens Qatar’s leadership in autonomous mobility and supports the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

Dr Al Shaibani emphasized that Autotaxis will provide residents and visitors with safer, more efficient, and convenient mobility solutions. Moreover, the project represents a significant transformation of the country’s transport ecosystem. It embraces cutting-edge technology to meet the growing demand for sustainable urban mobility.

The autonomous taxis feature advanced sensors and AI-powered navigation systems. Therefore, they ensure accurate route planning and help prevent accidents. In addition, the program aims to reduce traffic congestion, enhance public transport usage, and improve passenger experience across Doha and other urban areas. By combining technology with practical transport needs, the initiative sets a new benchmark for smart mobility in the region.

Officials highlighted that the rollout will occur in phases, beginning with high-demand urban zones. Furthermore, plans to expand the service nationwide are already in place. Authorities will continuously monitor the Autotaxis and collect operational data. This approach allows them to refine performance, maintain safety standards, and optimize efficiency.

The project also reflects Qatar’s broader strategy to integrate smart technologies into public services. By pioneering autonomous mobility solutions, the country demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and regional leadership in smart transport. Additionally, these Autotaxis support urban development plans and align with global trends in autonomous transport.

Dr Al Shaibani added that Autotaxis will pave the way for more tech-driven projects in the transport sector. Passengers can expect a seamless experience that combines safety, speed, and convenience. Meanwhile, the data collected from the service will inform future urban planning and mobility strategies.

By investing in Autotaxis, Qatar strengthens its position as a global leader in smart mobility and sustainable transport solutions. Consequently, the program underscores the country’s vision of combining modern technology with efficient and safe urban travel for all residents and visitors.
