Qatar launched a new Chief Quantum Computing Officer (CQO) program to strengthen its leadership in emerging technologies. The event, hosted by Qatar Chamber, highlighted the country’s commitment to advancing quantum computing.
The seminar took place yesterday, with participation from key leaders including Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar Chamber Chairman, and Sheikh Abdularaman bin Hassan Al Thani, Chairman of Fusion Group. Also attending were Rashid bin Hamad Al Athba, QC Second Vice Chairman, QC board members, and experts in quantum technologies.
Dr. Saif Al Kuwari, Director of the Qatar Centre for Quantum Computing, delivered a presentation on the Centre’s objectives. Established in 2023, the Centre aims to build an integrated ecosystem to accelerate quantum computing technologies. He explained that the initiative strengthens Qatar’s position in the field and promotes applications across the region.
Furthermore, Muhannad Abdul Jawad, General Manager of Fusion Integrated Solutions Qatar, outlined the country’s significant investments in the sector. He noted that Qatar has allocated QR2 billion to quantum computing, accounting for two-thirds of GCC investments in this technology.
Abdul Jawad emphasized that the program aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, which focuses on building a diversified, knowledge-based economy. He stressed the importance of nurturing national talent capable of leading innovation in quantum computing and other emerging technologies.
Petra Florizoone from IBM clarified that quantum computing complements, rather than replaces, classical computers. She highlighted its potential to accelerate performance, enhance processing power, and represent a transformative step in computing technology.
The program is expected to develop local expertise, foster research, and create opportunities for collaboration between academia, industry, and government. Analysts suggest that such initiatives could strengthen Qatar’s competitive edge in advanced technologies regionally and globally.
Looking ahead, participants anticipate that the CQO program will drive further investment, encourage knowledge sharing, and prepare a new generation of quantum computing specialists. The seminar underscored Qatar’s vision to become a hub for innovation while supporting its long-term economic diversification goals.
Overall, the launch of the CQO program reinforces quantum computing as a strategic priority, combining technology development with talent cultivation to position Qatar as a regional leader.
