QatarEnergy Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with Petronas

QatarEnergy and Malaysia’s national oil and gas company Petronas have signed a landmark LNG supply agreement. The 20-year deal will deliver two million tons of liquefied natural gas annually from Qatar to Malaysia starting in 2028. This LNG supply agreement highlights QatarEnergy’s role in meeting global energy demands while promoting sustainable energy development.

The agreement was formalized at the 21st International Conference on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG2026) in Doha. Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy CEO, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, signed the deal alongside Petronas President and Group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik. Both leaders emphasized the importance of long-term cooperation and energy security between the two nations.

Al Kaabi said the deal demonstrates QatarEnergy’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s growing energy needs. He added that the LNG supply agreement reflects QatarEnergy’s dedication to strengthening bilateral partnerships and promoting cleaner, reliable energy solutions. Furthermore, it signals confidence in Malaysia’s energy market and its future development goals.

This LNG supply agreement marks the first long-term contract between QatarEnergy and Petronas. In addition, it underlines the trust and mutual strategic vision shared by both organizations. The deal also reinforces Qatar’s position as a leading global supplier of liquefied natural gas.

Qatar holds the third-largest proven natural gas reserves in the world and supplies roughly one-fifth of global LNG trade. With this agreement, QatarEnergy continues to diversify its international partnerships and secure sustainable markets for its LNG exports. Meanwhile, Malaysia gains a stable and long-term source of energy to support its economic growth and energy transition plans.

Experts note that long-term agreements like this are critical for global energy stability. They reduce market volatility and encourage investment in infrastructure and sustainable technologies. Moreover, such partnerships help countries meet energy security goals while supporting global climate commitments.

Looking ahead, QatarEnergy and Petronas plan to explore further collaborations in natural gas, LNG infrastructure, and regional energy projects. This agreement sets a strong foundation for long-term cooperation, fostering innovation and economic development for both nations.

The LNG supply agreement between QatarEnergy and Petronas thus represents a major step toward sustainable energy growth, international collaboration, and stable LNG markets for the decades ahead.
