Saudi Arabia has urged for greater international coordination on satellite technology standards. The Kingdom made this call during the 40th Space Symposium in Colorado. The event, held from April 7 to 10, brought together major players like SpaceX, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, Iridium, and Boeing. Saudi Arabia’s participation demonstrates its ambition to enhance its role in the global space sector.
During the symposium, Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST), led a panel discussion. Al-Tamimi emphasized the importance of aligning technical standards globally. He stated that this alignment would create a better environment for investment in satellite communications. Additionally, it would help reduce operational and capital costs for all involved.
Al-Tamimi also addressed the challenges posed by non-standardized, proprietary technologies. He explained that these technologies make it difficult to integrate different systems. However, he also noted that this situation offers an opportunity to improve interoperability. By adopting global standards, the Kingdom can reduce manufacturing costs and deliver better services to users.
Saudi Arabia’s commitment to space and satellite communications is in line with its broader Vision 2030. The Kingdom aims to use modern technologies to drive economic and social development. The country already holds the largest and fastest-growing ICT market in the Middle East and North Africa. This market is valued at over $40.9 billion and contributes 4.1% to Saudi Arabia’s GDP.
Saudi Arabia’s strategic position also plays a key role in its ambition to become a hub for cloud and connectivity services. With access to Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Kingdom can serve as a gateway to these regions. The Space Symposium provided an ideal platform for Saudi Arabia to push its agenda for satellite standards.
