Saudi Aramco has instructed Arabian Drilling, the kingdom’s largest drilling contractor, to restart two of its suspended offshore jackup rigs. This move strengthens offshore operations and shows rising confidence in Saudi Arabia’s energy sector.
To begin with, Arabian Drilling received suspension notices for three jackups in spring 2024. At the time, the company said the suspensions would last up to 12 months. It did not specify which rigs or exact timelines. The two recalled rigs will start operating at prevailing market day rates in the first quarter of 2026. Offshore segment utilization will reach 100% by the second quarter.
In 2025, Arabian Drilling renewed 22 of 24 contracts set to expire. This included eleven land rigs and one jackup contracted to Khafji Joint Operations. “Resuming two offshore rigs is an encouraging signal for Arabian Drilling and the energy sector,” said Ghassan Mirdad, CEO. “It reflects growing momentum and renewed confidence in our operations.”
Additionally, other regional contractors also faced temporary suspensions. Borr Drilling, Shelf Drilling, and ADES received similar notices. Last week, ADES received a resumption notice for its 2019-built Admarine 510 jackup. It will start operations in Saudi Arabia in 2026.
The restart of Arabian Drilling jackups will create new operational opportunities. It will also strengthen workforce deployment across offshore projects. Consequently, the company can meet rising demand efficiently. It ensures consistent service delivery to Saudi Aramco.
Moreover, Arabian Drilling continues expanding operational capacity in offshore and onshore segments. Its fleet flexibility and proactive contract management allow fast responses to market shifts. Analysts say the restart signals higher demand for drilling services. It also reflects Saudi Arabia’s strategy to maintain energy production for global markets.
Ultemately, the 2026 restart will optimize Arabian Drilling’s resources and strengthen its market position. It demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to energy resilience, operational efficiency, and long-term planning.
