Estonian start-up Stargate Hydrogen has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia’s Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDI). The partnership aims to accelerate the company’s activities in the Middle East. Moreover, it supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global clean energy hub. Consequently, it will establish its regional headquarters in Riyadh, named Stargate Hydrogen KSA.
The collaboration will focus on technology transfer and local innovation. For instance, Stargate Hydrogen’s electrolyser technologies will be adapted for deployment in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the company will form partnerships with Saudi academic institutions to advance research and development. Furthermore, cooperation with local manufacturers will build domestic production capacity for electrolyser solutions.
Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, emphasized the significance of the partnership. He said, “Saudi Arabia offers a unique and globally competitive environment to scale transformative technologies. Through this partnership with RDI, Stargate Hydrogen will drive IP generation, support local talent, and contribute to the Kingdom’s clean energy goals.” Therefore, the agreement reinforces both technological growth and talent development in the region.
Stargate Hydrogen recently inaugurated a 140-MW electrolyser factory in Estonia. This facility demonstrates the company’s expertise in producing cutting-edge green hydrogen solutions. Moreover, it provides a foundation for scaling operations globally. Consequently, the Riyadh headquarters will serve as a hub for regional expansion and knowledge sharing.
The partnership brings tangible benefits for Saudi Arabia. For example, localising electrolyser technology will create new jobs and enhance industrial capabilities. Additionally, Saudi academic and manufacturing sectors will gain hands-on experience in advanced clean energy solutions. Furthermore, the collaboration positions the Kingdom as a leading player in the global hydrogen economy. Therefore, both Saudi Arabia and Stargate Hydrogen stand to benefit from accelerated innovation and sustainable energy development.
Overall, this MoU highlights Saudi Arabia’s commitment to renewable energy and clean technology. Moreover, it reflects the country’s strategy to attract international expertise while nurturing local talent. Consequently, the partnership strengthens the Kingdom’s role in the global transition to green hydrogen.
