Sultan Ibrahim’s Bahrain Visit Strengthens Malaysia’s Strategic Relations

The king of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskander, concluded a three-day state visit to Bahrain to strengthen diplomatic, trade, and security ties between the two countries. Defence Minister Khaled Nordin described the visit as a personal effort by the King to build close and trusting relationships with friendly nations.

Speaking to Bernama during the visit, Khaled Nordin highlighted the importance of friendly countries in today’s challenging geopolitical environment. “Such state visits allow His Majesty to foster direct and personal ties, creating trust and understanding that go beyond formal agreements,” he said.

Khaled Nordin noted that Malaysia’s policy of neutrality requires partnerships with nations that can offer strategic support and understand its positions on global issues. He said Bahrain, as a major producer of oil, gas, and aluminium, with a strong economy focusing on services, finance, and professional sectors, can be a key strategic partner for Malaysia in expanding markets, including in Africa.

The visit reinforced cooperation in both trade and security. Khaled emphasized the significance of peace and stability in the ASEAN and GCC regions, noting that these are essential to strengthening bilateral trade. He added that defence collaboration, intelligence sharing, and security expertise are crucial components of the relationship between the two nations.

Bahrain is a significant trade partner for Malaysia, ranking ninth among West Asian countries, 11th as an export destination, and eighth as an import source. The state visit included discussions on mutual trade opportunities, strategic planning, and enhancing economic collaboration for long-term benefits.

King Sultan Ibrahim departed Bahrain on Sunday evening. His special aircraft left Bahrain International Airport at 8 pm local time and arrived safely at Senai International Airport in Malaysia at 8:30 am the following morning, concluding a successful three-day state visit that strengthened diplomatic, trade, and security ties between the two nations.
