Damascus, Dec. 15, 2025 – Officials from Syria and Iraq met on Monday to enhance Syria Iraq cooperation. They focused on improving border crossings and streamlining trade and passenger movement.
The meeting took place at the General Authority for Ports and Customs in Damascus. Syrian authority head Qutaiba Badawi hosted the Iraqi delegation led by Lieutenant General Sami Abdul Hussein Radhi, advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister.
During the talks, participants discussed reactivating the al-Tanf – al-Waleed border crossing. Additionally, they explored plans for a new crossing in the al-Bukamal area to serve as an alternative route. This initiative aims to boost trade efficiency and cross-border connectivity.
Both sides stressed the importance of coordinated border management. Furthermore, they highlighted that improved customs and security cooperation is key to strengthening economic ties. Officials also agreed to maintain secure and efficient passenger movement across the shared border.
The meeting comes after Syria and Iraq reopened the al-Bukamal crossing on June 14. Consequently, trade and passenger traffic resumed following a period of suspension. The recent discussions aim to build on that progress and expand bilateral cooperation further.
Experts note that Syria Iraq cooperation in border management can accelerate regional trade and create economic opportunities for both countries. Moreover, enhanced coordination reduces smuggling risks and ensures smoother commercial operations.
Officials emphasized that strengthening border infrastructure and security measures aligns with broader goals of regional stability. In addition, the discussions are expected to support long-term collaboration on trade, logistics, and cross-border initiatives.
