Al Ain traffic has eased following the official opening of the Zakher Intersection. This marks a major milestone in the local government’s infrastructure upgrades. The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) confirmed the completion of the Dh185 million project. It is expected to reduce travel times and improve road safety for thousands of daily commuters and residents.
The redevelopment transformed the previous four-way roundabout into a modern, traffic light-controlled intersection. The upgrade is designed to improve efficiency. Moreover, a major part of the project involved building a 900-meter tunnel with three lanes in each direction. The tunnel allows vehicles to move beneath Hazza bin Sultan Road. This road is a vital artery linking the northern and southern areas of the town center.
The upgraded route connects Falaj Hazza in the east with Zakher in the west. It also links the Hazza bin Sultan roundabout in the north to the Shiab Alashkhar roundabout in the south. Commute times have already shortened for drivers traveling north from Zakher, Shiab Alashkhar, Shiab AlWatah, and Ain Alfaydah. These changes are easing congestion across key corridors.
Additionally, the project took 22 months to complete. It forms part of a wider strategy to enhance mobility and traffic flow across Al Ain. This initiative accommodates the growing demands of the region’s expanding population. It also improves overall safety and convenience on the roads.
‘The new intersection reflects our commitment to developing world-class infrastructure across Al Ain Region,’ said Abdulla Hamdan Al Amery, Executive Director of Al Ain Infrastructure Sector at Al Ain City Municipality. ‘It is part of our efforts to ensure the road network remains robust. It must also stay efficient and capable of supporting residents, commuters, and visitors alike.’
