Saudi Arabia Eyes Strong Ties with UAE After Yemen Row

Saudi-UAE relations are expected to improve following the UAE’s withdrawal from Yemen, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said. This development could reset ties between the Gulf neighbours.

The minister spoke in Warsaw during a press conference, highlighting Riyadh’s interest in strong, positive cooperation with Abu Dhabi. Yemen remains a central factor in the relationship.

Tensions escalated last year when UAE-backed separatists seized land along the Saudi border, prompting Riyadh to conduct air strikes and coordinate with allied forces.

Saudi Arabia demanded that all Emirati forces withdraw from Yemen. The UAE confirmed its compliance, suggesting a possible easing of the diplomatic row.

Faisal emphasized that Saudi UAE relations will depend on the UAE fully leaving Yemen. He called the move a “building block” for renewed cooperation.

He added that stronger ties would benefit both countries and support stability across the Gulf region. Analysts say the reconciliation is crucial for regional security.

Yemen’s government remains fragmented, largely held by opposition groups resisting Iran-backed Houthis, who control northern areas, including the capital Sanaa.

Previously, the country was divided between Saudi and UAE-backed factions. Riyadh reversed the Southern Transitional Council takeover, removing most Emirati-backed members.

Saudi officials accused STC leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi of fleeing to Abu Dhabi, along with other separatist officials, following the restructuring of Yemen’s government.

The Yemen conflict has broader regional implications. Experts note that Saudi-UAE relations affect Gulf trade, energy supply, and infrastructure investments across multiple countries.

Some analysts warn that lingering tensions could disrupt collaborative initiatives in Yemen, including humanitarian aid, economic reconstruction, and cross-border security coordination.

Despite past conflicts, both Riyadh and Abu Dhabi continue to share strategic goals, including counter-terrorism efforts and promoting regional economic integration.

Continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement will determine whether Saudi-UAE relations fully return to a cooperative path after the Yemen tensions.
