Muscat hosts a major satellite applications workshop, uniting experts from the Middle East and North Africa. Furthermore, the five-day event reinforces Oman’s role in satellite technology, meteorology, and regional scientific collaboration.
The Center of Excellence for Satellite Applications, in partnership with the European Satellite Applications Association, organizes the 21st Satellite Applications Workshop. Participants study satellite fundamentals, remote sensing systems, and practical applications. In addition, the workshop offers hands-on experience for real-world application.
Twenty-four trainees from 11 countries are attending. They represent Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Libya. Moreover, the event encourages knowledge exchange and fosters international cooperation.
The workshop focuses on third-generation satellite applications, which provide efficient, high-quality coverage of the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean region. Participants also analyze environmental and atmospheric phenomena, which supports climate research and disaster preparedness.
Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khadouri, Director General of Meteorology at the Civil Aviation Authority, called the event a “significant regional milestone.” He added that it enhances regional integration, improves knowledge sharing, and strengthens meteorological services.
The World Meteorological Organization recognizes the Center of Excellence as an accredited hub for satellite science education. Therefore, Oman’s specialized personnel contribute to the center’s strong regional reputation.
This year, the center celebrates its 20th anniversary. In addition, it trains over 500 participants annually from 27 countries. The center also offers distance learning, blended courses, and in-person programs.
Training covers more than ten satellite application areas, including climate, marine, and data services. Furthermore, the center partners with Sultan Qaboos University, the German University of Technology in Oman, the Royal Navy of Oman, and the National Space Program. It also coordinates with three international organizations to advance applied research.
By developing satellite science skills and promoting cross-border cooperation, the workshop strengthens Oman’s regional leadership. As a result, the country demonstrates its commitment to satellite expertise, sustainable development, and environmental preparedness.
Overall, the satellite applications workshop serves both as an educational platform and as a strategic step toward regional collaboration in space technology, climate monitoring, and scientific research.
