Oman Requires High Energy-Consuming Entities to Appoint Omani Energy Efficiency Officers

Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals has issued a policy requiring high energy-consuming entities to designate a qualified Omani national as an energy efficiency officer, the Oman News Agency reported on Saturday.

The officer will monitor energy consumption, analyze consumption data, identify ways to improve efficiency, oversee related plans and measure their results, the agency said.

The Oman Net Zero Center will issue a regulatory framework setting out the policy’s requirements and implementation details, including which entities it covers and the procedures involved. The agency did not say when the framework would be issued.

The policy aims to cut energy consumption and waste, improve operational efficiency and support Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, said the expansion of electricity generation and the diversification of its sources must go hand in hand with effective management of energy consumption.

He said the policy’s success depends on the commitment of management at the entities covered and on building energy efficiency into their operating plans and investment decisions.

The minister said the policy should also help reduce carbon emissions and develop specialized national expertise.
