Oman green steel plant to drive hydrogen-ready production

Jindal Steel Duqm plans to launch a 5 MTPA green steel plant in Oman. The company belongs to the Naveen Jindal Group. It aims to transform steelmaking using hydrogen-ready technology in Duqm’s Special Economic Zone.

The group plans to invest about USD 3 billion in this massive project. Work will happen in two phases for faster progress. The first Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) module will produce 2.5 MTPA of steel. This unit will start operations within a few years. The second unit will follow soon, adding another 2.5 MTPA capacity. Together, they will make the Oman green steel plant one of the largest in the region.

At first, the facility will run on natural gas due to current infrastructure. Later, it will switch fully to green hydrogen. This shift aligns with Oman’s clean energy goals and global demand for greener industries.

furthermore the company executives confirmed plans for hydrogen injection into the DRI process. As hydrogen supplies grow, natural gas usage will drop sharply. This strategy will help the Oman green steel plant cut emissions and meet international environmental standards.

However, the plant will also use Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. This combination allows flexible, cleaner steel production. It meets demand for low-carbon materials from European steelmakers facing strict regulations.

Also, renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Duqm will support the plant’s transition. Oman’s government and private firms are already building these facilities. Once ready, they will supply steady green hydrogen to power operations.

The Naveen Jindal Group signed agreements with Oman’s government earlier. These secured land and ensured strong support for the green steel plant. This partnership highlights Oman’s goal to lead in sustainable industries worldwide.

However, experts call this project a turning point for Middle East heavy industries. It shows how companies can scale clean technologies successfully. The Oman green steel plant also targets the growing demand for low-carbon steel globally.

Never the less, as climate concerns grow, industries want sustainable raw materials for production. Jindal Steel Duqm will offer Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and DRI with low emissions. Duqm’s strategic location gives the plant access to European and Asian markets.

For this reason, this Oman green steel plant represents a bold step toward a cleaner future. It combines advanced technology, renewable energy, and strategic investment for sustainable steelmaking.
