Iraq has officially launched the Iraq Najaf refinery expansion to increase fuel production and improve the country’s energy security. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani led the foundation ceremony, emphasizing the project’s crucial role in supporting national development. This step reflects Iraq’s strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in fuel and reduce dependence on imports.
The Iraq Najaf refinery expansion aims to add 70,000 barrels per day to the facility’s capacity. Once complete, the refinery will produce 100,000 barrels daily, meeting a larger share of domestic demand. The project also includes upgrades to align with Euro 5 environmental standards. This change will allow Iraq to produce cleaner fuels and reduce harmful emissions across its energy network.
Moreover, the expansion will support industries in the central Euphrates provinces. Petrol production will rise to 20,000 barrels per day. The refinery will also deliver aviation fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), essential for many sectors. These products will supply power stations, asphalt plants, and cement factories. Consequently, the Iraq Najaf refinery expansion will strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and contribute to economic growth.
Energy Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani stressed the importance of maintaining high-quality standards during the project. Deputy Oil Minister Adnan Mohammed Hammoud and the Governor of Najaf also attended the ceremony, showing strong support for the initiative.
