Iraq launched a major electricity project to enhance power generation in the capital. The government began upgrading the Dora Thermal Power Station in Baghdad to boost electricity output. This initiative will strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and support growing demand.
Furthermore, the Iraq electricity project includes rehabilitating two existing units and installing two new ones. Each unit provides 160 megawatts, adding a total of 640 megawatts to the national grid. This will help reduce electricity shortages across Baghdad and the surrounding areas.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani attended the launch and emphasized the project’s national importance. He explained that the plant’s central location in Baghdad makes it a strategic asset. In addition, the station will also benefit from its connection to the nearby Dora Refinery, which supplies fuel under strict environmental standards.
Moreover, the prime minister underlined Iraq’s goal of achieving energy self-sufficiency. He stressed that the government continues to secure fuel supplies for all current and future power plants. According to his statement, Iraq aims to rely solely on domestic gas sources in the coming years.
To maintain consistent electricity, the Ministry of Electricity is working to improve the transmission and distribution network. Through its decongestion plan, the ministry has stabilized power supply levels and minimized power loss. This step plays a key role in meeting local energy needs.
The Iraq electricity project will connect the upgraded units to the 132 kV grid in the Karkh area. This connection will enhance electricity distribution and reliability for residents in the capital. Work on the rehabilitation will follow a phased schedule to avoid power interruptions during implementation.
Fuel from the Dora Refinery will power the plant’s units, making the process efficient and cost-effective. However, the Iraq electricity project also supports environmental goals by reducing dependence on inefficient, outdated systems.
Alongside this development, the government continues expanding renewable energy efforts. Solar projects are expected to begin generating power soon. These projects show Iraq’s broader commitment to a balanced and sustainable energy mix.
