GCC Tourism Drives Economic Growth and Jobs

GCC tourism contributed $247.1 billion to the region’s economy in 2024, up nearly 32 percent since 2019. This growth highlights tourism’s expanding role in economic and cultural development.

Preliminary data from the GCC Statistical Center showed that intra-GCC travel rebounded sharply, rising 52 percent since 2019. Furthermore, about 19.3 million visitors traveled between member states, indicating stronger regional mobility. As a result, intra-regional tourism now represents 26.7 percent of total GCC tourism, highlighting its growing importance in the region.

The report “GCC Tourism: Intra-Gulf Integration” was released to coincide with World Tourism Day on September 27. It emphasized tourism’s contribution to economic growth, employment, and cultural exchange while promoting environmental sustainability.

Saudi Arabia led regional tourism growth in 2024. The country welcomed a record 30 million international visitors, up 8 percent from 2023. Tourism spending reached SR284 billion ($75.7 billion), rising 11 percent year on year. Total domestic and international tourists reached 116 million, a 6 percent increase.

The UN World Tourism Organization reported Saudi Arabia posted the highest global increase in international tourist revenue in the first quarter of 2025. Arrivals rose 102 percent compared with the same period in 2019.

Madinah emerged as a key destination, ranking first in Saudi Arabia, fifth in the Gulf, and sixth in the Arab world. The city benefits from investments in cultural and spiritual attractions, including the Museum of the Architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque and the Safiyya Museum. Entertainment and cultural projects also support tourism development.

GCC-Stat projects tourism’s contribution to GDP could reach $371.2 billion by 2034, representing 13.3 percent of the region’s economy. The sector is expected to generate 1.3 million new jobs, with women gaining a growing share.

Experts highlighted tourism’s wider impact, noting it strengthens regional integration and supports transportation and infrastructure industries. Protected areas cover nearly 19 percent of the GCC landmass, reflecting environmental stewardship.

GCC tourism plays a critical role in diversifying economies, creating jobs, and fostering cultural connections, while advancing sustainability throughout the region.
