TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Secure 400 MW Solar Plant Contract in Saudi Arabia

A consortium of France’s TotalEnergies and Saudi Arabia’s Aljomaih Energy & Water (AEW) has won the contract to develop, build, and operate a 400 MW solar power plant in As Sufun, Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) awarded the license after a competitive tender process.

Under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the electricity generated from the plant will be sold directly to SPPC. Once operational in 2027, the facility will supply clean energy to more than 68,000 homes.

The As Sufun project forms part of Round 6 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The Ministry of Energy oversees the initiative, which aims to reduce Saudi Arabia’s reliance on liquid fuels. It also seeks to increase renewable energy capacity to 50% by 2030, supporting the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals.

Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President for Renewables at TotalEnergies, said the project marks the consortium’s second achievement under NREP. He added, “Together with our partner Aljomaih Energy and Water Co., we are thrilled to help Saudi Arabia increase the share of renewables in its energy mix.”

Ibrahim Aljomaih, Chairman of Aljomaih Energy & Water Company, emphasized that the project aligns with national sustainability goals. He said it demonstrates the company’s “unwavering commitment to supporting the Saudi Green Initiative and advancing the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.”

TotalEnergies already operates the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant in Saudi Arabia. It is also building the 300 MW Rabigh 2 project, reinforcing its long-term role in the Kingdom’s energy transition.

The As Sufun solar plant will incorporate advanced photovoltaic technology to maximize efficiency. Engineers from both TotalEnergies and Aljomaih will oversee construction. They will ensure compliance with local environmental standards and sustainability requirements.

The project will generate employment for local communities during both the construction and operational phases. Training programs will prepare Saudi professionals for roles in plant management and maintenance. This approach supports the Kingdom’s goal of building a skilled renewable energy workforce.

In addition, the solar facility will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 500,000 tons per year. This will help Saudi Arabia achieve its climate commitments while supporting economic growth. The consortium will monitor performance continuously to maintain high efficiency and safety standards.
