Muscat, Oman — The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology invited local and international companies to submit proposals for the Al-Amarat–Busher Road Tunnel. This project will modernize transport infrastructure, improve connectivity, and benefit commuters, businesses, and local communities.
The tunnel forms part of a broader plan to upgrade key roads and provide alternative routes. Projects include the Al-Amarat–Dema–Tawayeen Road, the Salalah–Thumrait Road, and the Muscat–Interior Road (Maabilah–Thumid). Companies can buy project documents starting 3 November. The deadline for bids is 23 February 2026.
The road tunnel will connect the Wilayat of Al-Amarat, separated from central Muscat by mountains. It will complement the existing mountain road. The tunnel will also give direct access to the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), linking Al-Amarat with Ruwi.
Officials at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning expect the tunnel to transform Al-Amarat. It will improve transportation efficiency and create new opportunities for the business and tourism sectors. The project aligns with the Greater Muscat Structure Plan, which emphasizes public transport and reduces reliance on private vehicles.
The Muscat Municipality is improving safety on the Mountain Road. Authorities are applying advanced measures, including road engineering upgrades, better drainage systems, and enhanced traffic control.
Drivers face challenges on the steep Mountain Road, especially on the Busher side. Local residents and commuters often suggest building a tunnel to ensure safer travel. Authorities will maintain continuous police patrols along the road.
