Omantel Fibre Network Expands High-Capacity Services

Muscat, Oman – Omantel fibre network has expanded its digital infrastructure by partnering with Ciena to launch a high-capacity Managed Optical Fibre Network (MOFN) across Oman. Consequently, this upgrade strengthens Oman’s position as a regional hub for hyperscale, AI, and cloud-driven economies.

Moreover, the new MOFN leverages Ciena’s WaveLogic™ 6 coherent optics, enabling up to 1.6 Tbps per wavelength across both C and L bands. As a result, hyperscalers, cloud providers, and large enterprises gain dedicated, high-performance optical connectivity tailored for complex digital infrastructure needs.

In addition, Omantel manages the network end-to-end, ensuring secure, scalable, and flexible connectivity. Therefore, customers benefit from real-time SLA monitoring, bandwidth-on-demand, and automated provisioning, giving them full control over operations.

The fibre network also connects multiple international cable landing stations and carrier-neutral data centers, including MC1 in Muscat and Equinix SN1 in Salalah. Consequently, this design provides a resilient digital backbone capable of supporting hyperscale applications, AI processing, and data center interconnections.

Furthermore, through collaboration with Zain Group and Zain Omantel International (ZOI), Omantel extends the network’s reach across regional markets. Thus, enterprises can access international capacity and multi-country network services through a unified, fully managed model.

Additionally, the WaveLogic platform supports AES-256 encryption and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), offering ultra-secure transmission for government, financial, and corporate sectors. This security solution also aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 digital transformation priorities.

Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany, Chief Tech and Digital Officer at Omantel, explained that MOFN delivers network-as-a-service capabilities. He emphasized that customers can scale instantly, monitor performance, and innovate without handling network complexity.

Meanwhile, Thomas Soerensen, Vice President of Global Subsea and International MOFN at Ciena, noted that Oman is emerging as a regional hyperscale hub. He added that MOFN combines cloud simplicity with the performance of WaveLogic technology to deliver high-capacity, dynamic fibre services.

Consequently, this advanced infrastructure positions Oman as a digital gateway connecting Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe. It provides enterprises with agility, reliability, and secure connectivity, facilitating regional expansion and business innovation.

Overall, Omantel fibre network reflects the company’s strategic commitment to enhancing Oman’s digital ecosystem. Therefore, the initiative supports global enterprises, strengthens cloud-driven economies, and promotes Oman’s leadership in hyperscale, AI, and data-driven services.
