Japan-Saudi Cooperation Strengthens as Tokyo and Riyadh Advance Innovation and Cultural Projects

Japan-Saudi Cooperation advanced further this week as Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike highlighted a growing partnership shaped by innovation and culture. The relationship now moves beyond traditional trade as the two capitals expand joint projects in technology, entertainment, and sustainable development.

Koike traveled to Riyadh for her second visit this year, participating in a major investment forum that brought together global leaders and regional investors. At the event, she explained how Japan-Saudi Cooperation can support emerging industries and foster long-term economic growth. Her remarks emphasized smart cities, digital transformation, and cultural ventures.

During the visit, the governor reviewed progress on the Dragon Ball theme park in Qiddiya. This project represents the first theme park dedicated to the internationally renowned anime franchise and spans more than half a million square meters near Riyadh. It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s goal to expand entertainment offerings and attract international tourists. Officials view the development as a pioneering model for combining culture with strategic investment.

Koike highlighted that the park exemplifies Japan-Saudi Cooperation in a modern context. She pointed out how Japanese creative expertise complements Saudi ambitions in content creation. Furthermore, she stressed that culture can act as a bridge for broader economic collaboration between global cities.

The visit also connects with preparations for an upcoming summit in Tokyo. The forum will bring together leaders focused on sustainable investment and regional economic challenges. Koike is scheduled to deliver a keynote promoting innovation as a key driver of prosperity across Asia.

Earlier in May, her first visit emphasized women’s leadership and urban policy. She underscored the importance of balanced development supporting working families. The second trip demonstrates a wider agenda, expanding into technology, innovation, and long-term strategic cooperation.

In Riyadh, discussions covered smart infrastructure and green growth initiatives. Koike praised ongoing efforts in future city planning and examined opportunities linked to major events such as Expo 2030 and the 2034 World Cup. Both capitals aim to share expertise in sustainability, mobility, and digital systems.

She also showcased Tokyo’s role in enhancing financial resilience. Tokyo Resilience Bonds, for instance, fund climate adaptation projects and renewable energy initiatives. The bonds provide financial support for storm and flood responses while promoting impact investment.

Koike’s professional background has shaped her focus on these priorities. Having worked in media and public service before becoming Tokyo’s first female governor, she now prioritizes smart infrastructure, social support, and sustainable development.

Her continued engagement with Riyadh signals stronger ties in culture, investment, and innovation. The partnership continues to evolve as both cities explore new initiatives with high global potential.
