An Emirates flight from Edinburgh to Dubai diverted to Manchester after fuel supply issues affected operations at airports in Scotland. The disruption caused delays for several flights departing from both Edinburgh and Glasgow on Sunday evening.
Emirates Flight EK24 departed from Edinburgh and made an unscheduled stop in Manchester to refuel. According to flight-tracking data, the aircraft left Edinburgh at 10:39 p.m. local time and landed in Manchester about 40 minutes later.
After refueling, the flight resumed its journey to Dubai. The aircraft departed Manchester shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Monday and later arrived in Dubai without further issues.
Airport officials confirmed that problems involving a fuel supplier that transports jet fuel by road caused the disruption. Unlike several major airports in England, Edinburgh and Glasgow do not connect directly to the Exolum fuel pipeline network.
As a result, both airports depend on road deliveries for aviation fuel supplies. A temporary staffing issue reportedly affected one of the fuel suppliers, reducing available stock levels and disrupting normal operations.
The fuel supply disruption affected the Edinburgh-Dubai flight along with several other services. In addition, an Air France flight from Edinburgh to Paris also diverted to Manchester for refueling.
Meanwhile, some TUI flights departing from Glasgow reportedly stopped at Prestwick Airport to take on fuel before continuing their scheduled journeys.
Airport authorities stated that they worked closely with airlines to minimize disruptions. Furthermore, officials said fuel suppliers resolved the staffing issue and restored normal fuel deliveries.
Glasgow Airport emphasized that no flights were cancelled because of the fuel shortage. The airport also confirmed that operations remained fully functional throughout the disruption.
The incident occurred as aviation markets continue monitoring fuel supply concerns linked to regional tensions in the Middle East. Industry analysts have raised concerns about global fuel availability following disruptions to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
