Two Killed at Aramco’s Shaybah Oil Field After Debris From Intercepted Drone Sets Contractor Vehicle Ablaze

Two foreign workers were killed and two others injured at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Wednesday after air defenses intercepted a drone targeting one of the field’s processing facilities, the Saudi Ministry of Energy said.

Operations at the field were not affected, an official source at the ministry said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

The interception caused a fire in a vehicle belonging to a contractor working at the field, outside the facility’s perimeter, the source said.

The two people killed were a Filipino and a Nepali national. A Pakistani and an Indian national were injured.

The relevant authorities responded immediately and took the necessary measures, the ministry said.

The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen said it intercepted seven drones launched toward the kingdom on Wednesday, in the Eastern Province, the Madinah region and the southern region, Arab News reported. The coalition said at least one of the drones was launched by Yemen’s Houthi group.

The ministry did not say who launched the drone that targeted Shaybah.

Shaybah lies in the Rub’ al-Khali, or Empty Quarter, desert, near Saudi Arabia’s border with the UAE.
