Qatar and Singapore Renew LNG Cooperation Pact as Leaders Meet in Doha

Singapore and Qatar have renewed a memorandum of understanding between QatarEnergy and the Singapore government on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-carbon technology, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday, CNA reported.

Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong witnessed the renewal in Doha on October 19.

The agreement aims to facilitate stable LNG procurement supply chains, especially in light of recent market developments, according to a joint statement issued after the ninth Qatar-Singapore High-Level Joint Committee meeting.

Qatar supplies around 25% of Singapore’s total LNG imports, according to World Bank data cited by CNA.

Around 95% of Singapore’s electricity is generated from imported natural gas, a mix of LNG and pipeline gas from neighboring countries.

The two leaders co-chaired the joint committee meeting. It was the first time in the committee’s 20-year history that it was led by the heads of both countries.

They also agreed to work toward elevating bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. That would make Qatar Singapore’s second strategic partner in the Middle East.

The leaders noted a QR1.5 billion ($411 million) agreement signed in February 2026 between Qatar’s Barzan Holdings and Singapore’s ST Engineering.

Wong is visiting Qatar from October 18 to 20, his first official visit to the Middle East as prime minister, Doha News reported.
