One Killed, Eight Injured in Attack on Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport

One person was killed and eight others were injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, late on Wednesday, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said.

The injuries ranged from minor to severe, and the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, the authority said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency early on Thursday.

The attack also caused material damage at the airport, which is being assessed, GACA said. It said it would issue further updates.

Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 said overnight that flights were being diverted away from the airport, Reuters reported.

Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, spokesman for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, said coalition forces intercepted and destroyed four drones over the Eastern Province.

The authorities did not say who carried out the attack. Yemen’s Houthi group had not commented, according to Reuters.

The attack came hours after debris from an intercepted drone killed two people at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field, according to the Saudi Ministry of Energy.

King Fahd International Airport, the main airport serving Dammam and the Eastern Province, has been attacked before, according to Reuters. Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways have suspended flights to Dammam until Oct. 24.
