US Treasury Lifts Restrictions on Several Iraqi Exchange Firms, Central Bank Says

The US Department of the Treasury has lifted restrictions on several Iraqi exchange companies, the Central Bank of Iraq said on Sunday.

The firms can now resume selling US dollars to travelers, the central bank said in a statement carried by the state-run Iraqi News Agency.

The Treasury acted after verifying that the companies met compliance standards set by the Central Bank of Iraq, according to the statement.

The central bank did not name the companies or say how many were affected.

It said the step is part of efforts to strengthen compliance with regulatory controls and organize foreign currency sales within approved frameworks.

Separately, new central bank rules took effect on Sunday that allow travelers to receive $2,000 every two months, up to six times a year.

The central bank has said that mechanism is meant to regulate access to foreign currency and ensure it reaches those entitled to it.
