Adnoc Approves $6.2 Billion Umm Shaif Gas Project to Expand UAE Energy Production

Umm Shaif Gas continues to play a major role in the UAE’s energy strategy. Adnoc has approved a $6.2 billion offshore development to increase natural gas production and support future energy demand. The investment also strengthens the country’s long-term plans for liquefied natural gas exports.

The company reached the final investment decision alongside its international partners. These partners include TotalEnergies, Eni, and China National Petroleum Corporation. Together, they will develop the offshore project over the coming years.

The approved investment includes three major engineering, procurement, and construction packages. These contracts have a combined value of $5.1 billion. International and UAE-based contractor groups secured the work. However, the company did not identify the selected consortia.

In addition, Adnoc Drilling will manage the drilling phase of the project. The company will drill 14 wells over an 18-month period. Existing drilling rigs will support the operation. The drilling contract carries a value of $365 million.

The UAE holds the world’s seventh-largest natural gas reserves. Therefore, expanding domestic production remains a national priority. The new offshore development supports that objective while strengthening long-term energy security.

Once operational, the project will produce more than 600 million standard cubic feet of natural gas each day. It will also deliver associated gas liquids that support industrial and commercial activities across the country.

The expected production equals around 10 percent of the UAE’s current daily natural gas consumption. As a result, the project will significantly improve domestic supply and reduce pressure on future demand.

Company leadership believes global demand for natural gas will continue rising. Therefore, the investment supports both local requirements and international market opportunities. It also aligns with broader plans to expand LNG production and exports.

According to company officials, the UAE continues accelerating its integrated gas strategy. This approach focuses on developing existing resources while creating additional export capacity. At the same time, it supports economic growth through major energy investments.

Production from the offshore development is expected to begin by 2030. Until then, engineering work, drilling activities, and construction will continue across several project phases.

Earlier this month, the company launched a global LNG marketing and trading platform. The initiative supports plans to reach 47 million tonnes of marketable LNG capacity each year by 2035. This expansion reflects growing international demand for cleaner energy sources.

The latest investment also follows previous expansion plans announced earlier this year. The company plans to award approximately AED200 billion in contracts over the next two years. These projects will strengthen both upstream and downstream operations across the energy sector.

Meanwhile, the company continues building additional export infrastructure. It is accelerating work on a pipeline designed to increase oil export capacity. The project aims to reduce reliance on traditional shipping routes during periods of regional uncertainty.

The company already operates a major pipeline connecting inland production with the UAE’s eastern coastline. This infrastructure has provided reliable export capacity during recent regional tensions.

Ongoing conflict across the Middle East has increased concerns about global energy supplies. Shipping activity through key regional waterways has faced significant disruption. Therefore, producers continue investing in alternative export routes and stronger domestic infrastructure.

Umm Shaif Gas represents another important milestone in the UAE’s long-term energy strategy. The project combines major investment, international partnerships, and modern infrastructure to secure future production. As development progresses, it will support economic growth, strengthen energy security, and reinforce the country’s position within global energy markets.
